about
A long time ago, my wife bought me a collection of Wendell Berry poems. Over the years, we would take turns reading poems aloud to one another. I seem to remember that happening on cold winter nights after dinner, sitting on the couch. Since then, I have experimented with setting some of Wendell Berry's shorter poems to music and this was one of them.
I first recorded the guitar and vocals at the same time, in one take, without a click track. Everything else, the bass, percussion, piano and harmony was added in to that first live take.
I am very grateful to Mr. Berry for his permission to use his poem here. I first reached out to him via snail mail and I received a handwritten letter just a few days later. A letter that was at once kind and direct, offering his blessing.
lyrics
Now you have slipped away
Under the trackless snow,
To you the time of day
Always is long ago.
You're safe among the dead,
Alive, your death undone.
"Come and dine," Christ said.
Consenting, you have gone.
